2005 Walk/Run for Umstead

HELP SUPPORT UMSTEAD STATE PARK & HAVE A GOOD TIME

WHEN : Saturday April 23

WHAT: 4 mile Walk/Run on a Park trail. Enjoy live music along the trail and on the main stage upon returning. A Community Event for the appreciation, use and preservation of William B. Umstead State Park. Funds raised will be used for controlling invasive plants, protecting native wildflowers, environmental education, and land acquisition.

REQUESTED DONATION: $25 adults ($15 children age 12 & under). Includes Walk/Run, T-shirt, live music, snacks, door prizes, free gifts from Great Outdoor Provision Company (event free for spectators). Registrations will be accepted up to the day of the event. To guarantee a T-shirt, pre-registration must be received by April 15.

WHERE: A private farm on Reedy Creek Road next to William B. Umstead State Park. The Walk/Run route starts and ends at the meadow and goes on the gravel multi-use trail in Umstead State Park.

(New this year!!) On-Site PARKING if you arrive BEFORE 9:30 am. Turn onto Reedy Creek Road from Blue Ridge Road across from N.C. Museum of Art, Raleigh. Car pooling is encouraged. Cars with 2 or more passengers will have premier parking.

(New this year!!) Race timing by Carolina Godiva Track Club. All walkers/runners get a numbered bib. Timing will continue until noon.

(New this year!!) TEAMS are 5 or more individuals (you can have as many team members as you’d like – see below for awards). Minimum donation/pledge from each team member is $25. Members of teams can pre-register and pick up packets together or individually. BUT, each individual registration form must state the team name. AND, the Pledge Forms and money raised must be handed for the entire team in one envelope.

(New this year!!) AWARDS and PRIZES

EVERYONE who raises more than $50: A gift certificate from Great Outdoor Provision Company worth 10% of amount raised. Raise $50, receive $5 gift certificate; raise $500 get a $50 gift certificate; raise $1,000 to get a $100 gift certificate!!

“BAG MAN” AWARD. Prize for highest pledge earner (can be a member of a team). Award is named in honor of the late Ted Mew, a long-term supporter and friend of the Umstead Coalition and it’s past treasurer.

  • TOP 10 fastest female and male finishers (4 miles)
  • TOP 5 fastest Master (age 40 and over) female and male finishers (4 miles)
  • TOP 5 fastest children finishers (age 12 and under)

SPRING BEAUTY TEAM AWARD: Goes to the team that raises the most amount of money. Each team member gets a gift certificate from Great Outdoor Provision Company valued at 20% of what they raise. Teams are 5 or more people.

VIOLET TEAM AWARD: Goes to the team that raises the most per team member (on average). For example, if your team has 5 members and the team raises $500 – the average per team member would be $100. If this is the winning Violet Team, each member of the team gets a gift certificate from Great Outdoor Provision Company valued at 20% of what the team members raised.

(NEW THIS YEAR!!) Registration and packet pickup at the Race/Walk start location. Reedy Creek Road, off Blue Ridge Road.

Friday, April 22. 3-7pm

SCHEDULE, Saturday, April 23

8am – 9:30 am . Register and Packet Pick-up for Walk/Run.

10 am. Walk/Run. Walk/Run any distance up to 4 trail miles with lots of live music – come discover Umstead State Park. Live music on Park trail. (Runners/walkers eligible for finishing awards, must complete entire 4 mile route). Trail is gravel. Fruit & water aid stations and music along the trail until noon. All walkers/runners will be asked to wear the bib provided and return to the meadow by noon.

Course: Runners will be allowed to line up at the front of the start. The route starts and finishes at Walton’s pasture, goes along Reedy Creek Road before entering Umstead State Park. The route follows the Reedy Creek multi-use Park trail (gravel) past Reedy Creek Lake until the 2 mile turn-around and returns same route. Course mileage will be marked every ½ mile and at the 5K turn around (if you choose). Splits will be called at the 1 mile and 2 mile turn around. NOTE: there will be a different entry back into the meadow upon returning to the finish. If you are enjoying the Park and the music, you may turn around at any point; we ask you to return to the meadow by noon.HOWEVER: fastest finisher awards are only for 4 mile finishers – you must get a ticket at the 2 mile turn-around and give to the volunteers at the finish line to prove you ran the entire 4 miles.

11:00am-2pm. Music on stage

Live Music by: Nixon, Blevins, and Gage; Bett Padgett; Brien Barbour; Jamie Purnell, Anthony Neff, and many more!

EXTRA STUFF:

All donations are tax-deductible. Receipts available upon request at the event-registration desk.

Family event (alcohol not allowed). Baby carriages OK, but must be suitable for use on gravel trail and grass pasture.

Dogs must be kept on lease.

All donations go to help Umstead State Park. Funds raised from this year’s event will go toward land acquisition, protection of wildflowers, controlling invasive plants, and environmental education.

Event goes rain or shine – but for the past 10 years, we have never had rain during our event – so we expect SUN this year!!

VOLUNTEERS. We are still looking for VOLUNTEERS to help with: Advanced registration events, site set-up (Thursday and Friday), and event day. Extra special gift for volunteers who help with parking. A great idea for Community Service.
