Service Day-Plant Vegetation, lay river rock -- Forested Rain Garden- Rescheduled to January 30

  • 01/30/2016
  • 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • William B. Umstead State Park

Registration

Registration is closed

We will be laying river rock on the side slopes and plant vegetation in the rain gardens.  We will also be installing 2 Monarch Butterfly/pollinator gardens (more details below).

Bring your work gloves and shovels if you have them.  But, we also have gloves. The Umstead Coalition will provide lunch, snacks and water.

Dress appropriately for working outdoors (but, there is nearby picnic shelter we have reserved for taking breaks). Service day goes rain or shine.

We recognize you may only be able to attend for part of the day -- we'd love to have help for whatever time you can participate.

This project should result in several environmental and user benefits, including:  reduced runoff volume and intensity of stormwater runoff (as well as treatment of sediment and nutrient pollutants) due to the infiltration into special soil media and plants installed in the medians. The trees and shrubs will also provide much needed shade in the hot, steamy parking lot.  The shade will reduce the temperature of the storm water and reduce the thermal impact to the downgradiant Park streams.
